Surfrider Foundation is currently campaigning to ban plastic bags in the state of California.

A study from the World Economic Forum predicts that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. To combat this problem, the State of California passed Senate Bill 270 in 2014, the first law in the United States to ban plastic bag use statewide. The law has yet to go into effect, and it faces repeal efforts come November when California voters will vote on whether to keep the ban or get rid of it. While those who want to repeal the bill suggest the bill is more inconvenient than effective, Surfrider points out that plastic pollution often harms or kills marine life.
